Flood Insurance

There is much confusion and misinformation about flood insurance, so please be diligent and make sure you speak with someone who is knowledgeable about the program.  Some important things to consider when buying a policy:

  • Your homeowner’s policy DOES NOT typically cover damages from flooding.
  • Any resident of an NFIP-participating community can purchase flood insurance; you do not have to be in a Special Flood Hazard Zone to buy it.
  • The policy is transferable if you sell the insured property.
  • The premium price should be the same regardless of which agency or company you buy the policy from, since this is a government supported program.

Floodsmart.gov (www.floodsmart.gov  Off site ) is a valuable resource for all aspects of the NFIP and flood insurance, including information on finding an insurance agent in your area.

The Arizona Department of Insurance has prepared a brochureAcrobat Icon PDFs  containing helpful suggestions.
